ABOUT US

WHAT WE DO

Throughout the world, Docomomo groups are busy educating government bodies, businesses and the public about the importance of the Modern Movement to the evolution of architecture and planning. Docomomo.UK, the British wing of Docomomo International, is one of the most active and longest established of these groups.

Some of our members are architects, and may or may not be involved in 20th-century conservation work. Many others come from other backgrounds, love 20th-century design, and wish to support our work of helping to protect the legacy of the Modern Movement.

We're based in London and we organise monthly meetings at our base in Farringdon. We also run study tours to other parts of the country and overseas, publish a twice-yearly illustrated newsletter, put pressure on planning authorities, and exchange information with other groups about conferences, exhibitions and buildings at risk.

REASONS TO JOIN US

At Docomomo-UK we strive to educate ourselves about the Modern tradition, take action to protect buildings at risk, and develop the values of Modern Movement thinking. This means monitoring and publicising threats facing noteworthy buildings, providing the necessary expertise to intervene on their behalf, and promoting ecologically-sustainable designs that achieve the best outcomes with the least means. ACTIVE CAMPAIGNING

Our dynamic volunteers work on many exciting campaigns, either on initiatives of our own or in partnership with others, to ensure that evidence of the Modern is not lost and that its heritage continues in current practice. Click here to help us save the fragile history of the new.

DOCUMENTATION

For greatest impact, we need to collect data on buildings at risk and the measures needed to protect them. This can include everything from preparing technical reports to media monitoring. Can you help? We always need extra expertise, especially in the regions. Click here to tell us more.

ASSISTANCE

There are several bodies in this country with whom we like to work and where we can offer help, for example, on calls for listing and the need for government intervention, but we are always looking out for more volunteers able to lend their time and expertise. Click here to get in touch.

PUBLICITY

Part of our job is to increase awareness of the importance of Modern Movement architecture and of the survival of individual artefacts. That means putting pressure on government bodies, building owners and funding organisations where rescue is needed. If you have experience in the field, click here.
